Herbal Medicine
Herbal Medicine, also known as Phytotherapy, is the oldest form of healing. Mankind has turned to nature and in particular to herbal medicine to restore and maintain health and vitality. Herbs are nature’s powerhouse of nutrients. Herbal Medicine is a gentle and effective way of restoring health and balance in the body. Herbs work on many levels including the emotional and spiritual to rebalance and heal. In Ireland we have a long tradition of Herbal Medicine practice. This tradition dates back to the 8th century and includes a large body of texts written in Irish.
The Consultation
The initial consultation takes approximately 1 hour to 1 hour 30 minutes. A detailed assessment will take into account the following:
- The present complaint
- Information regarding investigations and tests previously undertaken
- Medical and surgical history
- Details of medications being taken
- Diet
- Emotional well-being
- Exercise
- Lifestyle
An Iridology Assessment
The herbalist will assess this information and explain how the present imbalance of health has been reached. She will take into consideration constitution, levels and locations of toxicity and imbalances. The individual will be educated on diet and nutrition, exercise, naturopathic techniques, lifestyle changes and a herbal formulae will be prescibed.
How Herbs are Administered
A unique formula is specifically prepared using organic herbs where possible. They may be administered in the form of tinctures, teas, capsules, powders, decoctions, fomentations and ointments etc. In contrast to modern pharmaceutical preparations, herbs, when prescribed properly and administered in their whole state, have no side effects.

Follow Up
The individual will be advised by the herbalist when to return for a follow up appointment. This depends on the person and the condition being treated. Subsequent visits typically occur at intervals of 2-4 weeks.
